Weed Control in Walnuts

Annual and perennial weed control trials were retreatedin Butte, Solano and Yolo counties. The diversified locations continue to provide a vital basis for applicable information on walnut tree tolerance to herbicides and on weed control efficacy. Herbicidal control of a wide spectrum of annual or perennial grass and broadleaf plants has been evaluated for the winter and summer periods of 1980. ...

Understanding and Mediating Recent Failures in the Biological Control of the Walnut Aphid

The walnut aphid, Chromaphis juglandicola is a pest known in California for more than 100 years. The introduction of the parasitic wasp Trioxys pallidus from Iran in 1969 led to a dramatic success in the biological control of walnut aphid populations in California, and has provided sustained control of this devastating pest for the past 35 years. However, we are currently facing new walnut aphi...

CONTROL OF CODLING MOTH ON WALNUTS WITH A GRANULOSIS VIRUS ABSTRACT P. V. Vail

A granulosis virus was tested as a potential control agent for codling moth larvae on walnuts. The virus was produced and supplied by Sandoz, Inc. as our experimental insecticide. This virus is of considerable interest because it has little or no effect on beneficial parasites and predators and, therefore, probably would not disturb the control of the walnut aphid by the parasite Trioxys palladus.

Toxicity of Insecticides on Trioxys Pallidus, the Walnut Aphid and the Codling Moth

The benzoylphenyl urea insect growth regulators (IGRs), diflubenzuron, alsyston, CGA 112913, UC 62644 and Thuringiensin, were tested on adult and late third instar Trioxys pallidus and first instar walnut aphids. The organophosphates, phosalone and azinphosmethyl were used as positive controls. The IGRs and Thuringiensin were not acutely toxic to adult and larval Trioxys when contact, topical a...
